Montague L. Powell ***
Like so many of the fine rail photographers in "The
Who's Who," Monty has spent
a lot of years around railroads. He began his career
as a telegraph operator on the
Illinois Central's Springfield Division back in 1943.
In 1947, he moved over to TP&W.
He must have liked it there because he stayed with
them until the end.
And TP&W must have liked him too, because he became
a Dispatcher in 1962.
After TP&W was acquired by the Santa Fe in 1984,
Monty stayed on as their
head car clerk until 1989. Lucky for the rest of us,
Monty started taking Kodachrome
slides of the railroad scene, and all of its fascinating
changes as far back as 1954.
